Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction and it can happen to anyone even if previous reactions were mild. It can occur within seconds or even hours of exposure to something to which you are allergic. The most common causes of anaphylaxis are insect stings, peanuts and tree nuts, other types of food such as milk or seafood, and certain medications. Signs of anaphylaxis include:
* Skin reactions, including hives and itching and flushed or pale skin
* Low blood pressure (hypotension)
* Constriction of the airways and a swollen tongue or throat, which can cause wheezing and trouble breathing
* A weak and rapid pulse
* Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
* Dizziness or fainting
Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical treatment, including a prompt injection of epinephrine, or an epi-pen, and a trip to a hospital emergency room.
